Scholarships can make a college or university education more accessible and reduce the amount of debt students have to repay. Many schools rely on scholarships as a means of attracting students. Colleges and universities often make scholarships available to students based on a variety of factors. Centenary College: New Jersey high school students who have continuously performed community service in areas such as culture or the environment might be able to obtain these new awards from the Hackettstown institution, according to an October announcement in the Daily Record. The funds are provided in annual amounts of $10,000, the Daily Record article noted.
Kaplan University California Commitment and Experiential Learning Scholarships: Kaplan University in March 2010 announced these two new aid awards intended for California students. They're both designed to help students affected by a state budget crisis that has public colleges and universities in California making cutbacks. The California Commitment Scholarship provides undergraduate and graduate students who are California residents with $5,000. The Experiential Learning Scholarships make $1,500 available to California resident students who qualify for a Kaplan University course where they can earn academic credit for their work and life experiences. Kaplan University has also agreed to allow California community college students the ability to complete their associate degree programs with a Kaplan University online course.
Nova Southeastern University: Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based Nova Southeastern has announced several new aid ventures. They include AAHD Scholarships of less than $1,000 for students who expect to pursue health promotion, public health or disability studies at the undergraduate and graduate levels; American Society for Engineering Education Scholarships and Fellowships of different amounts for students who plan to study science technology, engineering or math (STEM) subjects at the undergraduate or graduate levels; Nova Southeastern University Trustee Florida Academic Scholarships that cover full tuition costs for first-time, full-time undergraduate students who have obtained Florida Residency Access Grants and who have met all Florida Academic Scholars Award eligibility requirements.
Western Governors University Mathematics and Science Educator Scholarships: If you're a math or science teacher who wants to advance your career, or if you want to teach math or science, you might be eligible for these new awards. They're provided in payments of as much as $800 for each six-month term and are renewable for as many as five terms or $4,000 in all. Western Governors University Mathematics and Science Educator Scholarships are designed for students who plan for the first time to participate in teaching certification programs and students who want to pursue advanced math and science degrees. Recipients are selected in part based on academic record and how prepared they are to participate in online college studies with the institution.
