You might think that scholarships are only for straight "A" students or star athletes, but nothing could be further from the truth. The fact is that there are plenty of opportunities for every student to take advantage of these cash awards, you just need to know how to find them and where to apply.
What Is A Scholarship?
A scholarship is a one time award of cash for college that unlike a loan, never needs to be repaid. Along with grants, scholarships are considered one of the best ways to get extra funding for school. They are often based on merit, but can also be awarded for a variety of other things that range from the quirky (such as left handed student scholarships) to awards based on field of study.
How Much Funding Can I Get?
The amount of money you can get varies widely. Some scholarships are worth a few hundred dollars while others are worth tens of thousands. Most of these awards are what is known as "partial scholarships", meaning that they only cover some of the costs of a higher education. Less common are the "full scholarships" which pay the entire cost of tuition, room & board, and books.
Keep in mind that you can apply for and receive more than one award at a time. There is no limit to how many awards you can combine in order to cover your funding needs.
Where Can I Find Scholarships?
The first place to start your scholarship search should be your guidance office or the financial aid office of the college you will be attending. These places can put you in touch with a number of opportunities. Aside from that, you should also check and see if your employer or your parents employer offer any type of scholarship for employees or their children. Larger companies often do have assistance available.
Another excellent resource for finding sources of college scholarship money is the internet. Between search engines, web databases, and guides, you can find a wealth of potential opportunities. The web is especially good for locating the strange and more obscure scholarships out there.
How Do I Apply?
Each scholarship will have some way of obtaining an application and applying. Some may have you call for an application, others you can fill out over the web. Whatever the case, be sure that you take the time to be neat and submit an application that is free from typos, errors, and general sloppiness. The purpose of your application is to impress, so check it once and check it again before you send it off. Also be aware that every opportunity has a deadline, so be sure to know what that is and don't be late.
