Find Scholarships In YOUR State

One of the most surprising pieces of information that I found while helping my son find free money for college was the huge amount of scholarships offered by our very own state. I quickly realized that by having him apply for scholarships specifically awarded to students who live in our state, the competition was greatly reduced. Think about it, which scholarship does a student have a greater chance of winning, a nationwide well-known scholarship such as "Best Buy" or "Wal-Mart" or an engineering or nursing scholarship offered only to students who live in the state where they are offered?
The good news is that if you Google, "Nursing Scholarships Michigan" (but replace Michigan with the state in which you live) you will easily find lots of scholarships. Also, in the big scholarship listing books (my favorite way to find scholarships) you will find whole chapters devoted to scholarships for EACH state in America. Another great thing about tapping into your own state's scholarship resources is the fact that most states offer grants to students who choose to attend college in their state. A student with good grades can sometimes be automatically be awarded grant money from their state. To see what your state offers, go to your official state website.
The most important way for your student to get any kind of financial aid, regardless of your financial situation, is by filling out and submitting the FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Don't assume that you make too much money to receive federal financial aid. Many colleges will not even try to award your student grant or scholarship money if the parents have not submitted their FAFSA. Also, If a student takes challenging courses in high school, they might be eligible for state or federal grant money by responding to the question on the FAFSA that asks about the "Student's Rigorous High School Coursework". Never assume that there is no money out there for your student! The possibilities are endless when it comes to finding money for college.
