Many students in undergraduate and graduate programs at colleges and universities experience some form of disability. Information from the US Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics show that the high school dropout rate for students with disabilities has experienced declines. The percentage of students exiting school with a regular high school diploma increased from 43 percent in the 1996-97 academic year to 57 percent in 2005-06 and those exiting with a certificate of attendance during this time increased from 9 to 15 percent, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. The proportion of undergraduate college and university students reporting disabilities between 1999-2000 and 2007-2008, meanwhile, increased from about 9 percent to 11 percent.

A good source for information is the HEATH Foundation, an online clearinghouse on post-secondary education for people with disabilities. The organization recommends that students refer to guidebooks and online sites that provide information about colleges and universities with services and programs that might provide them assistance. The HEATH Foundation also recommends that students take their research a step further, by speaking with admissions counselors and service providers at the colleges and universities that interest them.
