Student Aid - The Truman Scholarship
The Truman Scholarship is an extremely competitive, national scholarship scheme that awards 60-65 scholarships per year. The Foundation receives more than 600 applications for scholarships every year. In addition to these 600 applicants, there is also on-campus competition from students competing for one of a school's four scholarship nominations.
Because the Truman Scholarship is so competitive, it is important that students ensure that they meet certain criteria before applying in order to avoid disappointment and wasting their time. The student should, ideally be able to meet all of the following, although, if they answer no to more than two, they should consider that the Truman Scholarship will, in all likelihood, be unsuitable for them. First, at the time of application, the student should be pursuing a full-time bachelor's degree. (Students in graduate school are not eligible). The applicant must also be a US citizen, or expecting to receive their citizenship by the date of the scholarship award.
The student, in terms of their career interest, is generally looking to improve how government, non-profit and educational institutions serve the public. They must also be concerned about general societal and environmental issues, and wishes to work in education, government or the non-profit sector to help improve such conditions in addition to having no problems giving a commitment of three of the first seven years after a Foundation-funded degree to working in public service.
Additionally the student must have actively participated in student government/campus-based extra-curricular activities, or may have been involved in community service activities not organized by their school. They may have undertaken government internships or commissions, or become involved in interest groups or political activities or campaigns.
They may also have become involved in activities directly related to their career interests and have demonstrated leadership potential. The student should have the grades and coursework necessary to be accepted at a first-rate academic institution. They should also read a decent periodical and national newspaper.
