Unclaimed Scholarships

Each year millions of dollars in scholarship awards go unclaimed. There are many reasons for this, but the most common is that students just did not know they existed.  Another common reason is students feeling intimidated by the personal essay requirement.  In this article, I will give you an action plan to follow that will help you complete your scholarship application and I will give you valuable insight into writing a personal essay, so that unclaimed scholarships can be a thing of the past.  The Heyls Scholarship, which gives four-year scholarships to Kalamazoo colleges had 8 unclaimed scholarships last year at a value of $150,000 each.  Many of you are thinking how can I get my hands on a portion of the unclaimed scholarships out there? I hope that this article will answer your questions.
Here is an action plan that all students hoping to receive  college scholarships can follow.  Step one, is to do a self-inventory in which you ask yourself these questions,:Am I a member of  an underrepresented group? Am I interested in a specific and or unique field of study?  Step two, is providing detailed information about any talent or special interest you possess that would set you apart from other applicants applying for the same unclaimed scholarships.  I suggest you  provide video of yourself exhibiting your talent. You will need to provide a link to the video with your application, this will certainly propel your application to the top of the pack.
Step three entails writing a good personal essay.  The personal essay is very important.  It gives the selection committee a chance to get to know you beyond your grades, test scores and volunteer experience.  Most committee members are impressed by candidates that submit personal essays that demonstrate an ability to overcome challenges in life such as growing up poor or having a disability.  Their logic is that if you are able to overcome personal challenges you will certainly be able to overcome school related challenges that may come about. Finally, before submitting your personal essay have others proof read it checking for errors and flow.
