African-American Scholarship Opportunities

It wasn't so long ago that most university campuses were made up of white students. That has changed over the years and now campuses educate students from all walks of life. If you are an African-American, who is ready to pursue college, then you will want to find out some of the scholarship opportunities that may be uniquely yours.
Most people are familiar with such organizations as the NAACP and the United Negro College Fund. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has several different scholarship opportunities. If you visit their website you will find that awards range from $1,000.00 to $4,000.00 per academic year. You may be required to write an essay in order to fulfill the application requirements. For those who are more interested in other forms of expression, you may be interested in the video competition that is sponsored annually.
The United Negro College Fund has almost forty different opportunities for young African-Americans who are seeking a college education. The awards come in a variety of amounts and may or may not require essays and letters of recommendation. If you visit the website, you will find all the information that you need in order to organize your applications.
You don't want to stop your search for scholarships there. Depending on your field of study, you may find that certain professional organizations also offer scholarships that are specifically designed for African-American students.
For example, the AICPA, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants is seeking more minority Accountants and therefore has scholarship opportunities that are open only to African-Americans. There is also the National Black Nurses Association that has nursing scholarships. You may find an organization in your field by performing an internet search.
Private organizations also exist with the purpose of funding higher education for minority students. The Gates Millennium Fund was started by Bill Gates with $1 billion. The goal of this fund is to provide scholarships to disadvantaged minority students. Again, there is a website which has the details of this opportunity.
