Five Ways to Protect Yourself from Scholarship Scams

Scholarships and student financial aid programs have become more available nowadays to help students meet their financial needs. Unfortunately, some of these grants turn out to be scams which, instead of helping students achieve their dreams, rob them of a brighter future.
Here are some practical tips you can use to protect yourself from fraudulent scholarships:
Be cautious of scholarships that involve fees. Legitimate organizations do not solicit fees from students who want to avail of their scholarship packages. Remember, it's you who need money. Better conduct first a background check on the organization before applying for that scholarship.
Contact Directory Assistance to check if the company exists. If the company or organization doesn't have a directory listing, then it's most likely to be a fraud. To reach Directory Assistance, dial 1 followed by the area code and 555-1212.
Do not give out your personal information. These people are strangers, so no matter how reasonable the request sounds, it is best not to give out your personal details, such as your social security number.
Ask the company where it got your name and contact details. Scams use scripts designed to dig information from you and will try their best to avoid telling you about their agenda. Better be the one to ask questions first before they can do so.
Ask for printed copies of the scholarship policy. It's best that you review everything in print before saying yes to their offer. Keep all documents as well so you would have evidence to support your complaint when the scholarship turns out to be a scam.
If you feel uncomfortable about the scholarship being offered to you, then it's best not to go for it. You can also seek advice from your school's student affairs office or financial aid administration because these people are experts in handling cases involving scholarships and other forms of financial aid.
You can't afford to risk your future on something fraudulent. Be smart! Protect yourself from scholarship scams.
