How to restore a file in Windows 7

If you’ve ever accidentally deleted a file and then subsequently emptied the Recycle Bin, you’ll know that sinking feeling of knowing that your data has gone forever with little hope of recovery. Although you can always use third-party data recovery software to retrieve recently deleted files from your hard drive, there’s actually a much simpler way, and the tool you need is already built directly into Windows.
You may be familiar with the System Restore feature and its ability to recover your data in the event of a problem. However, you can also use System Restore to recover single files, or folders. To use this technique, System Restore must be set to protect the target drive, so you may need to enable it for any removable drives that are connected to your laptop. As long as System Restore is running, all you need to do is right-click on a folder and then click on Restore Previous Versions. You will then be able to select the file or folder you wish to restore.
This provides an invaluable way to keep your data safe but, of course, the best way to avoid disaster altogether is to regularly back up your files to an external hard drive. Factor this into your budget when buying your laptop, as it is well worth the money.
